The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) is a German non-profit political foundation based on the principles of social democracy. FES was founded in 1925 as a political legacy of Germany's first democratically elected president, Friedrich Ebert. FES promotes international cooperation, education and research in Germany and abroad. To achieve this, FES maintains offices in more than 70 countries and currently employs about 600 full time staff members. The Amman Office of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung is responsible for activities in Jordan and at the same time coordinates activities with Iraqi partner organisations in all governorates of Iraq. Since 2003 FES-activities in the Middle-East take place under the umbrella of a cooperation agreement between FES and the Arab League, signed by the President of FES, Anke Fuchs, and the General Secretary of the League of Arab States, Amr Moussa, in November 2003. The FES Amman Office is registered as an independent, non-governmental organisation accredited in Jordan through a long-standing partnership with the Royal Scientific Society (RSS) since 1986. The current president of the RSS is Her Royal Highness Princess Sumaya Bint El Hassan. FES-Amman cooperates with a wide range of partner institutions to establish platforms for democratic dialogue, organises seminars, holds workshops and publishes policy papers and background reports on current political questions. The work of FES in Jordan is financed by the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). For Iraq activities FES receives funding from the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs (AA) and the United Nations (UN), as well.
